In our previous posts, we've discussed what shelf stability is and why it matters. The next question is straightforward: What can manufacturers do about it?

While no formulation is completely immune to aging, there are several practical steps that can help preserve blend consistency and improve long-term performance.

How to Extend the Shelf Life of Your B-Side Blend

1. Start with Proper Storage

Storage conditions are often the first line of defense against premature material degradation.

B-side blends can be sensitive to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and prolonged exposure to air. Even a well-formulated system can experience accelerated changes if storage conditions are not properly controlled.

Best practices include:

Keeping containers tightly sealed to limit exposure to humidity and air

Maintaining stable storage temperatures to avoid excessive temperature swings

Using appropriate storage and transfer equipment

These relatively simple measures can help slow the mechanisms that contribute to stability loss over time.

2. Maintain Consistency Through Good Handling Practices

Over time, certain formulation components may settle or redistribute within the blend.

Without proper handling, that separation can create inconsistencies that affect processing and foam performance.

To help maintain uniformity:

  • Periodically mix or agitate stored material when appropriate
  • Verify blend consistency before use
  • Follow standardized handling procedures
  • Minimize opportunities for contamination during transfers

Good handling practices help ensure that the material entering production remains as close as possible to its original formulation.

3. Optimize the Formulation

While storage and handling are important, the most effective long-term strategy often begins with the formulation itself.

As polyurethane systems have evolved, formulators have increasingly focused on understanding the interactions between blowing agents, catalysts, surfactants, flame retardants, and other ingredients that influence long-term stability.

Formulation optimization can help:

  • Improve shelf-life performance
  • Reduce chemical interactions that contribute to degradation
  • Maintain more consistent processing behavior
  • Lower the risk of off-spec material
  • Improve production predictability

In many cases, specialized additives may help further enhance stability by addressing the root causes of formulation aging.

Looking Beyond Best Practices

Storage improvements and handling procedures can certainly help extend material life. But manufacturers are increasingly seeking solutions that do more than manage stability challenges. They want technologies designed to prevent them.

That's why the industry is placing greater emphasis on formulation approaches that help maintain blend performance over longer periods of time.
