What Is Forane® 32?

Forane® 32 is a single-component refrigerant increasingly used in residential and commercial air conditioning systems. It provides higher cooling capacity and energy efficiency than many alternative refrigerants and can operate with a lower refrigerant charge. Because Forane® 32 operates at higher pressures than R-410A, equipment manufacturers typically need to redesign components to optimize system performance and safety. 

What Is Forane® 454B?

Forane® 454B is a near-azeotropic blend consisting primarily of R-32 and R-1234yf. It was developed as a lower-GWP alternative to R-410A while maintaining operating characteristics that closely resemble existing R-410A systems. This similarity can reduce the amount of redesign required when transitioning to new equipment platforms. 

Is Forane® 32 Better Than Forane® 454B?

The answer depends on the application.

Forane® 32 may be the better choice when:

  • Maximum energy efficiency is a priority
  • Higher cooling capacity is desired
  • Equipment manufacturers are developing new platforms optimized around R-32
  • Reduced refrigerant charge is beneficial

Forane® 454B may be the better choice when:

  • A smoother transition from R-410A designs is preferred

Is Forane® 454B a Drop-In Replacement for R-410A?

No.

Forane® 454B is not a drop-in replacement for R-410A. Existing R-410A systems were not designed with the safety requirements necessary for A2L refrigerants. Retrofitting R-410A equipment with Forane® 454B is not permitted and can create compliance and safety concerns. Forane® 454B is intended for new equipment specifically designed for A2L refrigerants. 

 

Can Forane® 32 Be Used in Existing R-410A Equipment?

No.

Like Forane® 454B, Forane® 32 is intended for use in equipment specifically designed for A2L refrigerants. Forane® 32 also operates at higher pressures than R-410A, requiring equipment components engineered for those conditions. Existing R-410A systems should not be converted to R-32. 

 

Which Refrigerant Has Lower Global Warming Potential?

Forane® 454B has a lower GWP than Forane® 32.
