Avoiding Counterfeit Refrigerants
By Kris Crosby, Sr. Business Development Engineer
What are counterfeit refrigerants?
Counterfeit refrigerants are products that are intentionally mislabeled, diluted, contaminated, or sold in deceptive packaging while claiming to be a legitimate refrigerant. As global demand for refrigerants continues to evolve, counterfeit products have become an increasing concern across North America, Europe, and Asia. Authorities have identified counterfeit cylinders containing substances that differ significantly from what is listed on the label, creating risks for technicians, equipment owners, and the environment.
Why does it matter?
The consequences can be severe. Counterfeit refrigerants may reduce system efficiency, damage compressors and components, increase energy consumption, and shorten equipment life. More importantly, some counterfeit products have been found to contain highly flammable or reactive chemicals that were never intended for use in HVACR systems. In late 2025, Canadian authorities warned the industry about counterfeit refrigerants falsely labeled as R-410A that contained methyl chloride (R-40), a substance associated with significant health, fire, and equipment safety concerns.
Governments and enforcement agencies around the world are also increasing efforts to combat illegal refrigerant trade. Recent investigations have uncovered smuggling operations, counterfeit labeling schemes, and illegal distribution networks that undermine regulatory compliance and create unfair competition for legitimate suppliers.
How can you protect yourself?
The answer is simple: know your source. Counterfeit refrigerants are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it more important than ever to verify both your supplier and your product. Protect your business, your equipment, and your customers by purchasing only from authorized sources and authenticating refrigerant cylinders before use. Forane® Refrigerants include built-in anti-counterfeiting features such as QR-code verification, unique authentication codes, holographic labels, and micro-optic security elements designed to help you confirm product authenticity.
