Why does it matter?

More importantly, some counterfeit products have been found to contain highly flammable or reactive chemicals that were never intended for use in HVACR systems. In late 2025, Canadian authorities warned the industry about counterfeit refrigerants falsely labeled as R-410A that contained methyl chloride (R-40), a substance associated with significant health, fire, and equipment safety concerns.

Governments and enforcement agencies around the world are also increasing efforts to combat illegal refrigerant trade. Recent investigations have uncovered smuggling operations, counterfeit labeling schemes, and illegal distribution networks that undermine regulatory compliance and create unfair competition for legitimate suppliers.
