Arkema’s Calvert City, Kentucky plant turned 75 years old this month.
Over the decades, the plant has evolved to manufacture many specialty materials used in a wide variety of markets such as HVACR, building and construction, high performance coatings, pharmaceuticals, lithium-ion batteries, and semiconductor processing.
Originally Pennsylvania Salt company, the plant has been home to more than 1,700 employees. Arkema Calvert City has an annual economic impact of nearly $50 million on the community through payroll, utilities, and property taxes and has invested nearly $200 million over the last five years on capital projects to increase capacity and improve health, environment, and safety operations. These include two major sustainability investments. The Forane® 1233zd project, expected to be completed by the end of this year, will retrofit an existing production unit that aligns with Arkema’s climate plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 48.5% in 2030 as compared to 2019 over the full value chain. Earlier this year, the plant also announced that it will receive up to 35% of its power from renewable sources.
“Between the investments in low GWP specialty products, phenomenal safety record, and our exemplary, multi-generational staff of salaried and union employees, Calvert City has become the cornerstone of Arkema’s North American manufacturing facilities,” said Tony O’Donovan, President & CEO of Arkema Inc.
Beyond specialty materials, the Calvert City plant, opened in 1949, has consistently been a frequent contributor to the community, becoming a recent partner with the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club in May. The plant also participates in the Calvert City Industrial Mutual Aid Program, Good Neighbor Night, and the Arkema Science Teacher program. The company has contributed more than $60,000 to the Calvert Area United fund and sponsors scholarships to the University of Kentucky School of Engineering in Paducah.
